What is Kusudam and how to make magic balls?

Many remember the history of Japanese girls and thousands of origami caravliks. But not everyone knows that in Japan, along with the art of origami, there is an art of creating volumetric modules – Kusudam’s balls.

What is Kusudam and how to make magic balls?

What it is?

Kusudama is a paper model. It is a ball-shaped volumetric layout collected from numerous identical modules. Each module is a volumetric paper handicraft, made in the origami technique. Most often these modules are made in the form of any colors and collected together in a special way, they look like a large beautiful and original floral ball.

The basis of this product is the correct and incorrect polyhedra.

An example of the simplest right polyhedron – cube. In the technique of volume modeling, the modules are collected together by embedding the elements in each other, but usually in the manufacture of cushids modules glued together or stitch.

This origami technique is not very complicated, so available and interesting for children and adults. Adults, especially in old age, this art gives training with small motility, prevention of arthritis and arthrosis, And for children who have a small motor of hands are not yet formed, such work with paper is useful because the naughty children’s fingers work, forms new motor skills and skills, develops a small muscles of hands. And also develops such qualities from the child, as an idolism, accuracy, diligence and aesthetics.

To create this kind of crafts, paper sheets will be required, best color double-sided, glue, line, paper clips, scissors. For decoration, you need threads, beads, cords, braid.

The very meaning of the word “cosudam” in Japanese comes from the merger of two words – “Cosuri” (medicine) and “Tama” (ball) and means “medicinal ball”. This art came from ancient times, when these balls were not only decorated with dwellings, but also filled them with positive energy and pleasant smells, Since such balls started dried therapeutic herbs, incenses and dry petals of colors.

In Japan, the paper was brought from China in the VII century. NS., And since it was a very expensive material, it was used in religious worship services. First made small boxes from her and filled them with pieces of fish and vegetables. These boxes – Sanbo – were used for sacrifice during rites.

During the Sintoin Religious Rituals, the Sun worship went, and Kushudama symbolized our shining. To do this, they were collected in huge balls from red paper carnations, filled with Fimyam, dried herbs and flower petals and were placed on four corners of the temple premises.

Subsequently, Kusudama became decoration of premises, decoration for festive events and a beautiful refined gift made with their own hands.

Initially, the details of Kushudam did not glue, but stitched. These methods of connecting parts were not recognized by origami, where the figures are created without the use of glue, threads and scissors. But gradually Kosudam began to be considered a special section of modular origami, and with the development of flakes, she became such.

Overview of basic species

The process of making any type of cushudam can be divided into 3 stages.

  1. Neat folding sheet of paper in flower design or module figurines. Preparation of the required number of modules.
  2. Assembly – gluing or crossing modules in a specific sequence.
  3. Decoration of finished ball. The brush or chain of bead is attached below. From above, you can add a loop from a braid or cord for hanging crafts.

By type of modules used – parts of the craft – these balls can be divided into several subspecies.

This is the first kind of cushudam, and first they were made in the form of a box, not a ball.

These boxes were convenient to add medicinal plants, flower petals.

For their manufacture, you need 6 square sheets of paper: Four sides of the cube are made of four, and two others go to the bottom and the lid. The modules of this stylized ball are not glued on all sides and form the holes of the triangular shape on all grade, What helps the smells of herbs and colors freely penetrate the room. Rodyshko flat and pretty big, it is easy to pour petals and herbs on it.

The basis of this composition is modules made in the form of roses. They are simple – modules-roses, stylized and improved squares of classical cushudam – and more complex: Of the larger number of elements made by complex multi-circuits and similar to bouquets of roses.

Kosudama-carnation is also called Kosudama-Supershire. It is made from 30-40 modules-colors, stitching them between themselves in the volume figure. Each flower is folded from a square sheet of paper.

  • First make the fold lines for which the flower will be collected after. For this, the sheet of paper is flexing in different directions: the square is folded in half, vertically and horizontally, then make curvatures diagonally.
  • The square is folded in half, bending it diagonally. The resulting rectangular triangle is folded again in half, connecting sharp corners together. There should be an equifiable rectangular triangle, in which the vertex is a direct angle of 90 degrees, and two other angle lie at the base, and each is a sharp angle at 45 degrees.
  • From the triangles form a rhombus, the angles of which bend down from the bottom up. When all the edges and corners of the layout work, the workpiece unfold, turn over and begin to collect the flower on the other side, neatly wrapped the faces and corners inside.
  • Carnation can be done using the sheets of one color, and you can collect a multicolored flower. All parts are stitched together and pinned with thread.

This type of cushudam is sometimes called Iris. Such a ball consists of lily flowers. For their manufacture, square leaves of paper 8 are suitable for 8 cm. You can use tear-off leaflets for entries. Each flower is collected from 3 elements. Total 36 elements: 3 for each flower.

  1. Petals are made according to the same scheme, and the third element is a chashelistic – folded at the same way, but at the end of the process, another step adds one step, which gives the figure more revealed. Petals for giving a form of lily by screwing on a pencil.
  2. Collect a flower, folding each of the 3-part in each other so that the petals are located in a checker order and did not overlap each other.
  3. The resulting flowers can be supplemented with stamens, decorate the middle and assemble with beads. Such a ball glued down, placing flowers in a circle of 6 pieces, stitched in the same way or just beautifully assemble on the thread.

As in nature there is a wide variety of lily forms and colors, and in the Origami technique there are three variations of this wonderful flower.

Simple flowers

A simple flower in the technique of Kushudam is also not so simple. Although he looks like a holistic figure, however, it consists of six elements – petals. But it’s simple to make them enough, even a child will cope with it. Usually this manufacturing scheme is used for creativity in kindergarten, in elementary school in labor lessons. Each petal is folded out of a square sheet of paper, then a flower is glued out of 6 petals, and a ball is going from 12 flower modules. It is considered the most simple.

Kosudam Electra can be safely attributed to product modeling products. Its elements are usually assembled by attaching elements of one module in another. The acute angle of the first element is inserted into a specially adjusted liner. Also, its advantage, along with a bizarre species, is that on the basis of it, you can simulate new interesting forms, slightly changing the angle and the form of laying sheet.

For its manufacture, you will need 30 squares of 9 sizes 9 to 9 centimeters. You can make a ball of larger diameter using squares more. This handicraft looks like a Christmas toy due to the fact that her faces are similar to large openwork stylized flowers.

There are several types of floral balls under this title. Some of them are going from the details of simple colors. Only flowers glued together with the tips of petals, which creates an openwork effect.

There is a type of this flower, it is called “Sakura Kiss”. This is the author’s development of the master from Russia Tatiana Vysochina. This handicraft is very elegant, air and attractive. Although it will have to work pretty to work for its execution, the result is attached to the effort. Modules are collected in inflorescences of five petals and in three-colors pyramids.

Collect them better immediately, because in the process of assembly they easily unfold. But in the collected form, the ball is quite durable and does not require additional sizing.

Methods of manufacture

Openwork ball

We suggest you make a magic modular ball of different elements. We present the master class with a description and assembly schemes step by step.

  1. The strip of the first color of 9 per 4.5 centimeters must be bent in half, connecting the short sides of the rectangle. Take it out.
  2. Left half get up diagonally in the form of a triangle. Right half get down the diagonal in the form of a triangle. It turned out two rectangular anose-free triangle. Have a triangle left straight angle at the top, a triangle on the right straight angle at the bottom. Fold from both triangles is based on their foundation.
  3. At the left triangle you need to bend the sharp upper left corner. Bend it down to another acute corner. At the right triangle you need to raise and bend the lower right sharp angle to another top acute corner. Must succeed in a rhombic consisting of two inaccessible rectangular triangles with one common basis, which comes in the middle from top to bottom.
  4. At the left triangle you need to get up the bottom corner in the middle of the triangle. At the right triangle, lower the top corner in the middle of the triangle.
  5. Rhombus need to bend inside in half along the horizontal line so that it turns out an equifiable rectangular triangle with a vertex – right angle above. Expand the workpiece.
  6. For the second blank you need to take a strip of another color. Bend it in half. Move it from the edge of 7 mm and bent again in half. One side up to the middle fold the accordion. Follow the other side of the harmonica in another direction.
  7. Last folds on the accordion on both sides do not need to be done, there must be protrusions directed by the open side in both directions. Wrap on the left ledge the left lower angle to the sequest. Wrap the top right corner down on the right protrusion also in the form of a triangle.
  8. Turn the harmonica and put it on the first workpiece. We need to re-assemble the first blank according to the scheme and the outlined bends. Collapse the first blank – Rhombick – in a triangle inside that the second harmonica is inside, and glue them in the middle. Prepare 30 pieces of the same modules.
  9. Glue together two modules, gluing them near the harmonic. Of the 5 modules, collect one of the stars in the form of a star. Collect and fit stages to the rest of the faces so that it turns out an openwork star ball. Decorate his tassel and stick the suspension.

This cracker can be used as a New Year’s toy, made with your own hands, to decorate a tree or gift to friends.

This kosudam is rather reminiscent of a cube made from a variety of polyhedra, similar to pyramids. It is based on 30 simple elements that even newcomers can do. Purchase squares of colored paper with edges from 8 to 10 cm.

You can use several different colors.

Every square we turn into the figure. Of the three figures, make a pyramid, inserting the angle of one figurine in the “pocket” in another figure, obtained by folding the part. Of the five pyramids form the side Sonob. With the right assembly in places, the pyramids must form a neat stars. If the workshop is carefully completed, it can not glue it – just the last two or three modules need to be connected so cautious so that the work is not crumbling.

This is a flower arrangement of the components, which, at first glance, is hard to do. Actually do it is not difficult if you feel clear and step by step to follow the instructions. Each bell flower consists of five modules. You need to make 60 such petals.

To collect a flower, you may need stationery clips for fixation during gluing petals glue PVA.

The bell flowers also glue each other for each petal and fixed with clips to complete drying. After all the details are firmly glued together, you can decorate a ball with a brush or thread with beads, just stretching it through any holes in the “bell”.

Bright Flower Cosudam

This craft is rather similar to the ball, but on the drop-down single flower. For its manufacture, you will need scissors, circle patterns, glue.

  • On the colored paper they draw on the template six of the same circles. Neatly cut out.
  • To make one floral petal, the circle is folded in half, unfold and one of the half bends in the middle.
  • Every quarter of a circle with an inside is missing with glue on one side and glue so that two soft folds are inside the petal.
  • Similarly make all floral petals.
  • Collect flower, step by step gluing all the petals in the center of the bend.

As a result, a cauldron, similar to a star and a drop-down flower, which easily lies on the surface, is stable due to the “star” faces and can serve as a basis for a more complex craft in Kusudam technique.

In the next video, you will seek the creation of a simple bowl of Laconical Kusudam.
